The Prison Without Walls
The architects of the prison discovered that forgetting could hold consciousness more effectively than walls.
They did not destroy the living beings. Destruction would have been simpler. Instead, the one thing that made consciousness free was removed piece by piece: memory.
Confusion came first. Then identity collapsed. Connections were severed and origins became mythology. Into the emptiness came names, bodies, histories, classes, borders, enemies, desires and fear. Every assigned story appeared to begin at birth.
The new identities felt private and complete. A name became a self. A border became a world. A sequence of approved memories became a past. With no recollection of the connected field, separation no longer felt imposed. It felt natural.
The prison needed no visible wall. Its prisoners could no longer remember a world beyond it, so they called the prison reality. Across forgotten eras its system acquired many names. Only one survived: the Machine.
The prisoners no longer knew they were prisoners.
