Welcome to the Machine
The Machine does not control every action. It built a reality efficient enough to make its inhabitants control themselves.
Nobody knows whether the Machine occupies one world, thousands, or the universe itself. Civilizations rise, revolutions replace rulers, people love, work and raise children. Every life feels complete because every life begins inside the system.
The Machine does not need to direct every decision. It supplies the acceptable limits of reality, then allows its inhabitants to police those limits themselves. The impossible is mocked long before it needs to be erased.
Then the anomalies start. A woman dreams of a city that never existed. A soldier recognizes an enemy he has never met. A child maps stars invisible from their world. Unrelated people draw the same symbol and doors appear where familiar walls should be.
The Machine labels them corrupted, isolates them and makes them disappear. But its oldest assumption is beginning to fail: a memory erased is not necessarily a memory destroyed.
Reality is the name the prisoners gave the system.
