The First Fragment
Across the Machine, ordinary lives fracture at once when the first impossible memory returns.
One consciousness awakens at the center of civilization. Another is already running. Another serves the Machine and believes Syndicate Z is the enemy. One wakes imprisoned. Their lives overlap, but none yet knows the others exist.
The first Fragment is almost nothing: a face, a sound, a place, perhaps three seconds from an impossible life. The measurement changes from zero to 0.01 percent—and those three seconds destroy the certainty of everything that came before them.
The world does not visibly end. Breakfast waits on the table. Traffic continues below. Messages arrive from people who still recognize the assigned identity. Only the awakened person knows that a seam has opened through all of it.
Symbols surface. Familiar objects reveal other identities. A doorway returns to a wall that never had one. Neave appears, challenges, rescues, abandons and sometimes lies. He teaches one rule above all others: never assume what you can see is everything that is there.
If that memory is real, what else about your life is not?
